Hurricanes along the coast of Rhode Island cause heavy waves called storm surges that can be very dangerous.
Rhode Island
Rhode Island's coastline is occasionally hit by hurricanes and tropical storms, while areas throughout the entire state are vulnerable to severe snow storms.
Rhode Island was hit hard by the Blizzard of ’78. As three to four feet of snow fell across the state, strong winds continued to create high drifts. Thousands of people were stranded and more than 15 people died. Commuting to work in cities like Providence was impossible.
