Post Disaster Resources
Please utilize the following information and resources if you and your students have recently been affected by a disaster. In the case that the disaster has been declared a federal disaster, federal assistance may be available to individuals or municipalities in your area. Remember that the emotional and behavioral effects of a disaster can be long lasting, so don’t hesitate to discuss with your students how they feel after a disaster that may have many months ago. Students and teachers have reported that conducting emergency preparedness activities; like assembling an emergency kit, putting together a family communication plan, and learning about emergencies; can significantly help.
Where to get Federal Disaster Assistance
People – individuals and families – who need assistance after a presidentially declared disaster, can go to DisasterAssistance.gov to register online. DisasterAssistance.gov is a user-friendly Web portal that puts information about help from the government in one place, to make it easier for people to research and apply for disaster assistance. Disaster survivors can also apply for federal disaster assistance on their smartphones, making it easier to apply for help right after a disaster hits.
