
With the Map Modernization program officially coming to an end in 2010, FEMA has initiated a new program called Risk Mapping, Assessment, and Planning (Risk MAP). Risk MAP is intended to capitalize on the success of Map Modernization and move further. The vision of Risk MAP is "to deliver quality data that increases public awareness and leads to action that reduces risk to life and property."
The Broad Goals of Risk Map include:
In a nutshell, FEMA is looking to further update high risk areas (for example coastal areas and levees) with new hydrologic and hydraulic studies and build upon that data with increased hazard mitigation. Risk MAP is built on a platform of enhanced communication: What is risk? How do we change people's perception of risk? And how do we minimize risk?
