The Community Rating System (CRS) is a FEMA program that encourages communities to adopt flood mitigation practices that go above and beyond requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Depending on their level risk reduction, communities can qualify for Class 9 (lowest) through Class 1 (highest) status. Residents in participating communities can receive up to a 45% discount (Class 1 communities) on their flood insurance premiums.
In Rhode Island, there are four communities that are participating in the Community Rating System.
Narragansett and
North Kingstown have each earned a
Class 9, saving their residents up to 5% on flood insurance premiums.
Middletown and
Pawtucket have also implemented actions to reduce their town’s risk of flooding, earning
Class 8 status. Flood insurance policy holders in Middletown and Pawtucket qualify for up to a 10% discount on their premiums.
In addition to the above communities working to improve their rating, there are at least 3 other Rhode Island communities that have started the process to enter into the CRS program.
